Chapter 362: Evacuation (1)
Long Yu frowned and added, "In addition, sandstorms blocked the sun and covered the ground with dust and sand. This situation will definitely hinder agricultural development."
"I don't know if there is enough food at the base's warehouse to support the survivors until the sandstorm passes. If they don't have enough food reserves, then the last thing we have to worry about is crime."
Yao Ran's expression darkened as she added, "A Yu is right. Sandstorm is different from the fog. While both limit vision, people can still walk outside if they cover their noses and mouths in sandstorms. With proper precautions, a sandstorm isn't fatal."
"However, it would be easier to kill or rob due to limited visibility. Perhaps, desperate people will take more extreme actions."
When she finished speaking, both Long Yu and Shi Xuan exchanged glances.
As ex-soldiers, the two of them had witnessed the darkest sides of humanity. In the current world, where morality had all but disappeared and only the strong had the power to decide their fate, it wasn't surprising that humans might resort to eating each other to survive.
After a long silence, Yao Ran felt hungry and said, "I'm going to make something to eat. Do you two want to eat together?"
The moment she asked, Long Yu's stomach grumbled loudly, and all three of them glanced at his stomach simultaneously.
Yao Ran chuckled when she heard that. "Come down in five minutes," she said before she headed downstairs.
As she left, Long Yu turned to the window and noticed a few vehicles moving outside. As an ability user, he has better vision, but he can only barely make out the shadows of the vehicles and the soldiers down there.
Watching the soldiers come down from the vehicles and begin knocking on the villas one by one, Long Yu said, "The base has sent soldiers here."
Shi Xuan also observed the vehicles as they approached, so he said nothing. After a moment of silence, he asked, "Are they here to evacuate survivors?"
Long Yu thought about it and replied, "Maybe. The people living in this villa area are wealthy or have powerful connections. It's not surprising that the base leaders prioritize evacuating them first."
After watching the soldiers escorting people out of the villas for a while, Long Yu turned away and headed downstairs, followed closely by Shi Xuan. As they reached the first floor, they heard someone knocking at the door.
Knock, knock, knock!
A second later, a muffled male voice came from the other side of the door.
"Is there anyone inside? I'm a soldier from the First Army. I'm here under orders to evacuate the residents of this villa area. Please open the door."
In the kitchen, Yao Ran heard the commotion and came out to investigate. When Long Yu opened the door, the strong wind blew sand and dust into the villa. Long Yu covered his nose and saw the soldier standing there with his face covered, blocking the wind.
The soldier looked at him and said, "Comrade, we are here to evacuate everyone. Please pack your belongings and follow us to the underground shelter immediately."
Walking up to them, Yao Ran asked, "What's happening? Why do we need to evacuate now?"
The soldier turned to her and replied, "The Institute of Meteorology and Geophysics has just announced that this sandstorm has engulfed the entire Beifeng Province and might persist for a long time."
"They also estimated wind speeds could reach at least 80 kilometers per hour. We had to get out before the wind picked up any further. For your safety, please cooperate with us."
Just then, another soldier approached and said, "We are leaving in five minutes."
The first soldier nodded to his teammate before turning back to Long Yu and Yao Ran.
"Please pack lightly and be ready to gather in three minutes," he instructed before leaving to knock on their neighbors' doors.
After Long Yu closed the door, Shi Xuan asked, "Captain, what is your decision?"
Long Yu thought for a moment before replying, "Since the base leaders have decided to evacuate everyone, then we should go with them."
"This sandstorm might be more destructive than we thought. Moreover, with the Institute of Meteorology and Geophysics announcing that this giant sandstorm has covered the entire Beifeng Province, I suspect it will last for a long time."
Listening to his analysis, Yao Ran said, "I agree with A Yu. It's just a pity that we have just fortified the windows and doors with tempered glass and metal doors."
Seeing her reluctant expression, Long Yu reached out and ruffled her hair.n/o/vel/b//in dot c//om
"Don't worry about the villa," he said. "Since the base has sent soldiers to evacuate the residents of this area, they have likely done the same for survivors in other places. I doubt anyone will come here to rob us if what that soldier said was true."
Yao Ran considered his words and nodded. "Then I will go and put our things into my space
first."
"Alright."
With that, the three of them began packing in a hurry. While Yao Ran stored everything in her space, Long Yu and Shi Xuan packed their personal belongings into their backpacks. Before leaving, Yao Ran took out three respiratory masks and three goggles from her space. After putting them on, the three locked the metal doors and stepped outside.
Carrying their backpacks and weapons, they made their way to the gathering point.
When the soldiers saw them approaching, one of them instructed, "Please board bus number three."
Following the instructions, Long Yu, Yao Ran, and Shi Xuan boarded bus number three. Upon stepping inside, Yao Ran noticed Mu Xichen sitting there. Beside him, a man wearing glasses was staring at her with interest.
After a brief exchange of glances, Yao Ran nodded at Mu Xichen and walked to the back row. She sat by the window, Long Yu sat next to her, and Shi Xuan followed, taking the last seat. From the last row, they had a clear view of the bus interior.
