Chapter 887: We’re Back

Grandma Gao accompanied them, her face marked by guilt. “After you left, Big Yellow refused to eat from that day on. Later, he even started crying, lying there and frothing at the mouth. I quickly had someone take him to the animal hospital. But when we arrived, he became aggressive with the strangers, and no one dared to approach him. The doctors could only sedate him for the examination.”
She continued, her voice trembling, “The doctor said it seemed like he had given up on himself. It wasn’t that he was sick and lost his appetite; he just didn’t want to eat or drink. He’s very sad, and there’s a chance he might not pull through. I’m so sorry…”
Grandma Gao had also grown fond of Big Yellow and had hoped for his recovery. Ever since he was taken to the hospital, she had visited him daily, wishing and praying for him to get better.
But with each passing day, Big Yellow’s condition seemed to worsen. The doctors kept telling her there was little hope left.
Su Li burst into tears at this news. “Mom! I want Big Yellow! I don’t want him to die! We can spend money to save him; I heard in the hospital that money can save lives! Boo hoo…”

Big Yellow had always been healthy; it was hard to believe that he had become so despondent after they left. It was clear to her that Big Yellow felt abandoned, which was why he refused to eat or drink.
Her heart raced with panic. She felt responsible for this turn of events. She thought as long as someone cared for Big Yellow’s basic needs, he would be fine.
But she had overlooked the fact that Tibetan Mastiffs are incredibly loyal and often only recognize one owner. She had seen reports before about Mastiffs refusing to eat after their owners passed away; she should have anticipated this!
Su Shen’s expression darkened as well.
Big Yellow was not just a pet; he was a military dog he had raised and trained himself, boasting strong health and resilience. How could he have deteriorated so quickly? Driven by urgency, he quickened his pace, determined to see Big Yellow and assess the situation for himself.
The group finally arrived at the animal hospital, and from a distance, they spotted Big Yellow confined in a corner of the waiting area, lying listlessly in a cage. His eyes were dull, and he seemed devoid of the natural alertness dogs typically exhibit. Instead, he lay quietly, awaiting death.
Su Shen hurried over with his wife and children.
Su Li pressed his face against the bars of the cage, tears brimming in his eyes as he waved at Big Yellow. “Big Yellow, we’re back! Please don’t die!”
Hearing the familiar voice, Big Yellow suddenly opened his eyes wide and struggled to stand, his body weak from days without food.
Despite his fatigue, he managed to rise and turned his gaze toward his family, tilting his head back to emit an excited bark. He then bumped his head against the cage door, creating a clattering sound.
Su Shen turned to a nearby staff member. “Please, give me the key!” After receiving it, he unlocked the cage himself.
Big Yellow burst out, circling Su Shen three times before wagging his tail and sprinting towards Gu Zi and the kids, visibly revitalized.
Grandma Gao finally let out a breath of relief.
Her face lit up with joy. “It seems Big Yellow missed you all! The moment he saw you, he perked right up! This dog is incredibly intuitive!”
The veterinarian and staff nearby were equally astonished. “He’s been with us for days, and we’ve never seen him so gentle. It seems dogs truly recognize their owners!”
Su Shen took Big Yellow home, and to comfort him after his ordeal, Gu Zi spent the afternoon in the front yard, playing with Big Yellow and the three kids. She even picked out a large pork rib from the meat delivered from the slaughterhouse and made a stew just for him.
Gently stroking Big Yellow’s head, she said, “Good boy, Big Yellow. We will never leave you at home again.”
The world of dogs is simple; they just want to be with their owners. What’s wrong with that?
If they decided to raise a dog, they needed to ensure it was always by their side. Otherwise, there was no point in having a pet at all. Gu Zi vowed that such a thing would never happen again.
Later that evening, Grandma Gao came over again, and Gao Ming bounced in excitedly behind her. Upon seeing Su Li, he broke into tears and then quickly ran off to play with him. “Don’t worry about falling behind in your studies. Starting tomorrow, I’ll help you catch up. But tonight, we should just have fun. Can I sleep over with you? I asked Grandma!”
Wiping away Gao Ming’s tears, Su Li nodded enthusiastically. “Of course! I saw so many interesting things in the capital. I can’t wait to share them with you!”
What do you think?
