Chapter 60: A Troublesome Gratitude
Before Damien could respond to Maui, there was a cry of sheer glee behind him. He turned and looked at the woman who was standing at the entrance of the guild. Her eyes were filled with tears but her expression was that of happiness.
"You are alive."
"Thalia!" Samuel raised his good arm and waved at his daughter who let out a whimpering sob before running past everyone standing outside the guild. She threw herself into the arms of her father.
"Thank god, thank the beast god, that you are safe Father," Thalia buried her face in the crook of the neck of her father with tears trickling down her cheek. "I thought—oh father ..thank you...thank you for coming back."
She then turned to look at Xavier and Damien. Her eyes stayed on Xavier for two seconds and Damien thought that she was going to hug him as tight as Thalia did to her father.
However, contrary to his expectations, Thalia willed her gaze away from Xavier and then threw herself in his arms after pulling away from Samuel.
"Hey? Woah." Damien staggered behind as he caught hold of Thalia's waist. "Watch before jumping, Miss Thalia. We could have fallen—"
He didn't even get to finish what he was saying when the woman raised her hands and caught hold of his face. And then —
Something soft and warm was pressed against his lips.
"Thank you," said the woman with a gleeful smile on her lips. "Thank you so much, like I promised…I will now hand my life over to you as payment."
"Bahaha! Good for you, Lia. You have found a good beastman to follow," Samuel guffawed as he patted his daughter on the back, her expression was shy and charmed as she peeked at Damien.
On the other, Damien was simply dumbfounded. Back then he thought that Thalia had simply said those words out of desperation never did he think that she meant them.
"So this was what you were after from the start?" Xavier accused as he wheeled and looked at Damien with disgust.
"No!" Damien refused at once. What did he mean by that he was after this from the start? He had never taken Thalia's words to his heart.
He turned around and looked at Thalia before saying, "Look. I am grateful and everything—but you should not hand your life to someone so easily, don't treat your life so lightly."
"Lord Damien—"
"That's right," a familiar voice chimed from behind and Damien whipped his head behind him, and there stood his supposed wife. She was dressed in a dark violet uniform with fuschia pink seams. Her long silver hair was tied in a long ponytail.
And as for her blood-red eyes —they were glaring at Damien as if hungry for his blood.
"Host, your emotions are getting unstable…your fear has risen by 95%," remarked Dan from somewhere top of his head and Damien didn't even turn to look at him as Wistoria made her way towards him.
Behind her was Nicholas with an awkward and helpless expression.
"Shut up," Damien snapped. "What are you doing here?" He asked while looking at Wistoria who smiled at him grimly.
"What's wrong?" She asked as she swaggered over to his side. She cast a single glance at him before turning to look at Thalia. "Did I interrupt something good?"
Thalia noticed the enmity wafting off from every pore of Wistoria's body. She narrowed her eyes and questioned, "And who you might be?"
"I am his wife," said Wistoria, smiling at the woman. She took a step closer to Thalia and remarked, "And I really do not appreciate what you just did now."
Her eyes glowed an eerie red as she peered down Thalia who was two inches shorter than her. "Be a bit more refrained from the next time."
"Beastmen are allowed to have as many mates as they want and like," retorted Thalia, causing the air to crackle with electricity.
"And you are forgetting that we are allowed to kill as well," Wistoria whispered threateningly.
"Alright," Nicholas who had followed Wistoria to the guild pulled his sister back. There was a slight pause as the two women glared at one another and then Nicholas said, "Damien, it seems like you are doing alright. The guild sent word that you went to the forest which was infected by Impert Snake Beast."
"Wistoria was worried about you, which is why she had been coming to the guild every day."
"Who was worried about this bastard?" Wistoria snapped as she freed her arm from her brother's grip. She glared at Damien and sneered, "So you are still alive?"
Damien looked down and then looked up before nodding, "Well since I am not in the category of an extra concentrated ghost —I think I made it out of that forest alive."
The woman sneered at him even harshly before walking past him, not forgetting to bump into him as she walked past him.
And—
"OUWW!" Damien gasped as he looked down at his foot that had been stomped on. "That hurts!"
However, Wistoria didn't stop walking instead she continued storming towards the carriage which was parked at a small distance from the guild.
Damien stared at her back furiously.
"Don't mind her," said Nicholas with a gentle voice. Damien turned and looked at him as he remarked, "Well my foot that was nearly squashed to bits, does mind." What? He was a sarcastic little thing from the day he was born, and it didn't help that his toes were throbbing a bit too painfully.
Nicholas smiled at him before saying, "She is just jealous. She has been coming here every day because she was worried that something might happen to you. Almost went to the forest to look for you but was stopped by Master Godric, who told her that this mission belonged to his guild."
"My sister is quite possessive of her things —and people."
"And now that you have finally returned…" he trailed off as he glanced at Thalia who went slightly pink. So did Damien, he shrugged what could be counted as casual and said, "That—I never asked her to kiss me."
He then turned to Thalia before saying, "Miss Thalia, for your father's aftercare— just clean his wounds with hot clothes, and hard alcohol and change his bandages every six hours."
"Make sure pus doesn't form around his wound."
"I—I got it, Lord Damien," Thalia glanced at Nicholas before nodding at Damien who waved his hand at her before taking his leave.
